Before you call

One slow drain is a different problem than every drain

Drain and sewer work splits into two categories, and telling them apart before anyone starts pulling equipment off the truck saves time and money. A single slow fixture — one sink, one tub, one toilet — is almost always a local blockage in that fixture's branch line. Hair, soap scum, grease, or a foreign object has narrowed the pipe somewhere between the drain and the point where that branch joins the main.

When multiple fixtures back up at once, or the lowest drain in the house gurgles when you run water upstairs, the problem has moved to the main line. That is a different job. Cabling a branch line will not touch it, and repeatedly clearing the symptom without looking at the cause is how a manageable repair becomes an excavation.

That is why camera inspection sits in the middle of this category rather than at the end of it. Putting a camera down the line shows what is actually there — grease buildup, scale, root intrusion at a joint, a bellied section holding water, or a break — and determines whether the right answer is cabling, hydro jetting, or a line repair. Diagnosing first is cheaper than guessing twice.

What changes the scope of a drain job

Access is the single biggest variable. A line with an accessible exterior cleanout is straightforward to work; one where the only entry point is through a roof vent or a pulled toilet takes longer. Knowing where your cleanout is before you call is genuinely useful.

After that it is the condition of the pipe and the nature of the blockage. Soft grease clears differently than compacted scale or a root mass at a joint, and older clay or cast-iron lines common in established Salt Lake and Utah County neighborhoods behave differently than newer PVC. Hydro jetting handles material that cabling only punches a hole through, which is why it is often the right call on recurring blockages.
